“This is a one-owner-at-a-time league, (but) that doesn’t mean we can’t prepare,” Khan told The Florida Times-Union. “We’ve had our first 25 plays and we’re executing them. This is not something you wait for. We know who our top three choices are. All three are excellent.”

Khan wouldn’t reveal the candidates he and general manager Gene Smith are considering, but he said the list includes some well-known names that haven’t been made public.

“It’s been proven to me, people want this job,” Khan told The Times-Union. “The area, the players, whatever the reason, I don’t know. But the fact is, there isn’t anybody we’ve contacted who said, ‘I’m not interested.’ Flip side, there are other names that have contacted us that we thought might not have an interest. … It’s a wider net than even we thought because of the volunteers.”

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora and Mike Lombardi reported that the Jaguars have requested permission to interview New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey for the job.

La Canfora reported Wednesday the Jaguars hope to interview O’Brien this weekend, with the Patriots on a playoff bye, but that seems unlikely at this point because he’s talking to Penn State about its head-coaching vacancy.

Interim coach Mel Tucker, who replaced Jack Del Rio for the Jaguars’ final five games of the 2011 season and went 2-3, already has been interviewed for the full-time position.

Due to several unfortunate injuries to key Jacksonville Jaguars players, the Jaguars’ 2011 season has been one of the worst seasons in franchise history. Though the team has plenty to work on, the 2012 season will hopefully be more exciting for Jacksonville and the team should be much better next season if the injured players are able to recover from their injuries and stay healthy.

Here are five notable predictions of the Jaguars for the 2012 NFL season:

Blaine Gabbert will be selected to his first Pro Bowl

Blaine Gabbert, who was selected with the tenth pick by the Jaguars in the 2011 NFL Draft, has been having a solid season for a rookie. In 14 games Gabbert has a total of 11 touchdowns and 2,122 passing yards. His quarterback rating this season is 64.3. Though this prediction may be heavy and perhaps unrealistic, Gabbert had a great college career and will one day become a consistent Pro Bowl quarterback, and next year could be Gabbert’s starting point.

Jacksonville Jaguars will win eight or more games in 2012

Though the Jaguars did not make the playoffs last year, the team was able to win eight games, while losing eight. If Jacksonville can stay healthy and draft a key player in the 2012 NFL Draft, the team may have a good chance at winning eight or more games in 2012.

Josh Scobee will remain as the starting kicker

Along with the prediction that Jones-Drew will be selected to another Pro Bowl in 2012, this prediction is arguably the most likely to happen on my list. Scobee, who was selected by the Jaguars in the 2004 NFL Draft, has never played for another NFL team. He will most likely remain on the team as he is a talented kicker.

Maurice Jones-Drew will be selected to another Pro Bowl

Maurice Jones-Drew has been selected to three Pro Bowls so far in his career: in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Though the starting running back will be 27-years-old by the beginning of the 2012 NFL Season, he has a very good chance at making his fourth Pro Bowl.

Mel Tucker will not be the head coach next season

Mel Tucker, who is currently serving as the interim coach for the Jaguars, may be a good defensive coordinator, but he has not been as successful as the Jacksonville head coach. In four games this season, he is 1-3. Expect that Tucker will be replaced by a veteran coach, who can help the Jaguars transform into a better team for the 2012 NFL season.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars have requested permission to interview Atlanta Falcons offensive co-ordinator Mike Mularkey about their head coaching vacancy.

A source requesting anonymity confirmed the move to The Associated Press on Monday. The NFL Network first reported the interview request.

The Jaguars fired coach Jack Del Rio in late November and put general manager Gene Smith in charge of the coaching search.

Mularkey went 14-18 in two seasons as head coach with Buffalo (2004-05). He has been Atlanta’s offensive co-ordinator since 2008, helping mentor quarterback Matt Ryan.

That could help his chances in Jacksonville, where the Jaguars are trying to get more out of rookie Blaine Gabbert.

Mularkey interviewed with Tennessee and Cleveland last season.

INDIANAPOLIS — The game -- Indianapolis Colts (2-13, 1-3 AFC South) at Jacksonville Jaguars (4-11, 2-3 AFC South), EverBank Field (Grass), Jacksonville, FL, 1 p.m. (EST)

INDIANAPOLIS —
The game — Indianapolis Colts (2-13, 1-3 AFC South) at Jacksonville Jaguars (4-11, 2-3 AFC South), EverBank Field (Grass), Jacksonville, FL, 1 p.m. (EST).

Coverage CBS Sports (Spero Dedes, Steve Beuerlein); Colts Radio Network (Bob Lamey, Will Wolford, Kevin Lee); Sirius NFL Radio Channel 113 (Colts), Channel 112 (Jaguars); XM NFL Radio Channel Channel 233 (Jaguars).

The coaches — Colts: Jim Caldwell (26-21, 3rd year); Jaguars: Mel Tucker (1-3, 1st year). Jim Caldwell has a 3-2 career coaching record against the Jaguars. Tucker is Jacksonville¹s interim head coach and has never faced Indianapolis in his current role.

The series — 22nd regular-season meeting. Colts lead series, 15-6. The Jaguars have posted wins in two of the last three matchups. Indianapolis, though, has won four of the past six and six of the past 10 meetings. The Colts have a 7-3 record against Jacksonville in road games. Six of the last eight games have been decided by a touchdown or less. Seven of the last eight meetings have been decided by 10 points or less. Eight of the last eight matchups have been decided by 14 points or less. Jaguars PK Josh Scobee has provided the margin of victory for Jacksonville in three of the series meetings (53 yards with 0:38 left on 10/24/04; 51 yards with 0:04 left on 9/21/08; and 59 yards with 0:05 left on 10/3/10).

Noting it QB Dan Orlovsky has completed 34-of-58 passes for 326 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions over the past two weeks in wins over Tennessee and Houston. Orlovsky has a 95 passer rating in fourth quarter as a Colts starter in 2011ŠRB Joseph Addai had two rushing touchdowns in his last meeting at JacksonvilleŠWR Reggie Wayne needs 113 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for the eighth consecutive season. Wayne has 887 receiving yards this seasonŠWayne has caught two touchdown passes in his last two games, wins over AFC South rivals Tennessee and HoustonŠWR Austin Collie has hauled in four touchdown receptions in his past four meetings with the JaguarsŠDE Robert Mathis has registered three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in his last two gamesŠMathis needs 1.5 sacks to reach 10 for the fifth time in his NFL career.

Did you know? With Minnesota winning last Saturday against Washington, it’s down to Indy and the Rams as to who will get the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft. But draft positioning is the farthest thing from the mind of the Colts.

Did you know 2? The Colts have never been swept by an AFC South opponent since the division came into existence in 2002. The Titans and Texans fell the last two weeks and Jacksonville is up next.

Did you know 3? WR Pierre Garcon needs 75 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for the first time in his NFL career. Garcon has six touchdown receptions this year, which ties his single-season best (2010).

Did you know 4? DE Dwight Freeney has recorded nine career sacks against Jacksonville. DE Robert Mathis is aiming for his third straight game with a sack against the Jaguars.

Stat of the week Reggie Wayne has 1,599 receiving yards against the Jaguars, the most against any opponent.

The game plan – Finish. That’s the goal heading into the Jacksonville game on Sunday.

Finish with a sweep of AFC South teams after knocking off Tennessee and Houston the last two weeks. Finish on offense when you’re in the red zone.

Find a way to punch the ball into the end zone. And finish on defense. Finish the turnaround that started in the second half of the loss to Baltimore.

Simply put, the Colts must be able to have a sustained running game while taking advantage of passing situations. Defensively, Indianapolis has to be able to slow down the Jaguars running game. And they must find a way to force mistakes by a rookie quarterback.

Key matchups – Colts WR Reggie Wayne vs. the Jaguars secondary. Wayne usually plays well against Jacksonville and he has played well over the last two weeks in wins over the Titans and Texans. Depending on how his offseason contract negotiations go, Sunday’s game with the Jaguars could very well be Wayne’s last in an Indianapolis uniform.

Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert vs. the Colts’ pass rush. Indianapolis didn’t do a bad overall job against Gabbert earlier in the season, although there were some crucial breakdowns in the second half of that game that allowed the rookie signal caller to break free of the pocket and make some plays downfield. That can’t happen on Sunday.

Colts run defense vs. Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew. Jones-Drew is considered to be the best running back that Indianapolis’ defense faces on a regular basis. He has been tough for the Colts to stop completely. They’ve slowed him down some on occasion, but Indianapolis — who came very close to drafting Jones-Drew in 2006 and teaming him with RB Joseph Addai — has yet to completely shut him down.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

After the Jacksonville Jaguars host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, crews must prepare the field to host the Gator Bowl the following afternoon.

The quick turnaround means crews will have a long night.

“Essentially, from the moment the Jaguars game ends until the gates open for the Gator Bowl game, there will be different activities taking place, breaking down one and prepping the other,” said Tracey Evans with SMG, which runs EverBank Field.

Evans said the company has executed turnarounds like this before, but a NFL game before a college game makes it unusual.

Plus, because it’s a bowl game, there are extra events going on inside the stadium, meaning more work.

“The two end zones will say ‘Jacksonville.’ Not Jaguars, not taxslayer, com. We’ll just change ‘Jacksonville Jaguars’ to a taxslayer.com logo,” said Evans.

Evans said her group has been meeting for moths in preparation.

“What you would typically do from Sunday to Saturday we’re doing in about a 15 hour period. Is that doable? Of course it is,” she said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew wonders how much of the NFL’s efforts to prevent or properly treat concussions have to do with lawsuits brought by former players against the league and its teams.

The NFL’s leading rusher spoke out about the issue again Wednesday, nearly a week after telling the Associated Press he would hide a possible head injury so he could stay in a game.

“I’ve had concussions before, and it wasn’t this big deal about concussions,” Jones-Drew said. “The only reason they’re making a big deal about concussions right now is because the league is getting sued over it. Before this, you never heard about it. A couple of years ago, you didn’t hear anything about it.”

After NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was grilled about his sport’s concussion policies at a congressional hearing in October 2009, the league made several significant changes. Those moves have continued, including this month’s addition of certified athletic trainers sitting in booths during games to keep an eye out for possible head injuries and alert teams’ medical staffs.

Starting this summer, at least eight lawsuits have been filed against the NFL by dozens of retired players who say they have medical problems related to brain injuries from their time in professional football. The NFL’s stance, in part, is that players knew there were risks of injury, and there was no misconduct or liability on the league’s part.

Jones-Drew called the possibility of serious injury in football an “occupational hazard.”

He was one of 44 players the AP interviewed recently about concussions. Slightly more than half — 23 — said they would try to hide a concussion and stay in a game rather than pull themselves out.

Players generally indicated they are more aware now of the possible long-term effects of jarring hits to the helmet. Five said that while they would have tried to conceal a concussion during a game in 2009, now they would seek help.

Players also said they should be better protected from their own instincts: More than two-thirds of the group the AP talked to would like to have independent neurologists on sidelines during games.

“You know playing football you’re going to get hurt, right?” Jones-Drew said Wednesday. “In the back of your mind, you’ve got to know that the worst that can happen is you can break your neck and be paralyzed for the rest of your life, right? You have to go into every game knowing that could be what happens. Any given play that could happen to you, right? So there it is. When you sign these deals, you know in the back of your mind, that’s what can happen.

“Now basketball, on the other hand, it’s a different sport. Race car driving, you know that when you get in that car, there can be an opportunity for that thing to flip over and catch on fire. You see what I’m saying? It’s an occupational hazard, simple as that, and you have to be willing to accept it, and I am.”

Jones-Drew reiterated that he takes the risk because of his family and said he strongly believes NFL teams would be hesitant to sign players with a history of concussions. So he would hide a concussion to stay in a game, even if it meant increased potential for long-term health issues.

“I would do anything for my kids,” he said. “If they’re happy, I’m happy. I think they would appreciate it. As long as my kids’ kids would be happy with what I did, that’s what this life is about: sacrifice. It’s not about you anymore, you know?”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew says lawsuits have fueled the NFL‘s crackdown on concussions.

The league’s leading rusher spoke out about the issue again Wednesday, nearly a week after telling The Associated Press he would hide a concussion to stay in a game.

Jones-Drew has been questioned several times about his concussion views since. His latest comments are his strongest.

He says until recent years there “wasn’t this big deal about concussions,” and adds “the only reason they’re making a big deal about concussions right now is because the league is getting sued over it.”

He reiterates that he knows the risk of playing such a physical game, calling injuries an “occupational hazard.” He adds that “you have to be willing to accept it, and I am.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Aaron Kampman is on crutches again after having surgery on his right knee for the second time in two years.

Interim coach Mel Tucker says Kampman had ”some work done to get some things cleaned up.”

Kampman tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in practice on Nov. 11, 2010. His recovery was slower than expected, and he only played in three games this season before going on injured reserve for the third consecutive year.

He had the same injury in his left knee in 2009. So Kampman will have missed 28 games over the last three seasons, including 20 since signing a four-year, $25 million contract with the Jaguars in March 2010. It’s unclear whether he will remain in Jacksonville next season.
