David Garrard(notes) has been a quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars since 2002 when he was drafted with the 10th pick of the fourth round. In his first season, he appeared in four games and made exactly 50 percent of his passes, going 23-for-46. One of those passes went in for a touchdown while two got pulled down for an interception. He also carried the ball into the end zone twice for TDs.

Since then, of course, he’s grown and matured a ton. The 33-year-old threw 23 touchdown passes last year as well as for 2,734 passing yards. He also threw the most interceptions of his career, 15, for the 8-8 Jags.

This year, Garrard will have a young protégé to bring along: 21-year-old Blaine Gabbert(notes), who was also selected 10th, but in the first round of this year’s draft.

The Florida Times Union hears that the plan once the season finally gets underway is not to waste time with Gabbert but to go ahead and start him if he actually looks to be better in training camp than Garrard. So there’s no time to take the youngster under his wing. When things get rolling in the NFL, Garrard will need to try and protect his nest rather than help the young guy out.
