Matt Leinart caught an unlucky break during a 20-13 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The Texans quarterback had been playing a strong game when he was slammed by a hard tackle. Although X-rays at the time were inconclusive, Leinart appeared to have a broken collarbone and may have to sit out the rest of the season.

Injuries to the collarbone, or clavicle, are not uncommon on the gridiron. The number of neck injuries from playing football is relatively higher than those in other high-contact sports, according to a 2005 study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Based partly on emergency-room patient counts between 1990 and 1999, researchers estimated there were 5,038 injuries from ice hockey, 19,341 from soccer and 114,706 from football.

Broken collarbones often require surgery; according to a 2010 study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, that may even be a better option than letting it heal naturally. The researchers looked at clavicle fractures sustained by NFL players over a five-year period and found that of 13 of the players with displaced “middle-third” clavicle fractures, six underwent surgery and healed in 8.8 weeks. The other seven players went without surgery and took 13.3 weeks to heal — and four of those seven actually refractured their collarbones within a year of the first injury. On average, those four players missed one and a half seasons.

Thus, to a professional player like Leinart, likely to be involved in a lot of high-energy impacts in the future, how it heals might be as important as how long it takes.

Jaguars Injury Report Week 12: Matt Roth And…

Read More: Aaron Kampman (DE – JAC), Guy Whimper (OT – JAC), Matt Roth (DE – JAC), Clint Session (LB – JAC), Brian Robiskie (WR – JAC), Derek Cox (CB – JAC), Terrance Knighton (DT – JAC), Tyson Alualu (DT – JAC), Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off their loss to the Cleveland Browns a bit banged up on the defensive side of the football. Starting linebacker Clint Session was placed on injured reserve yesterday, suffering his second concussion of the season. Defensive end Matt Roth also left the Browns game with a “head” injury, presumed to be a concussion. The Jaguars were also without defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, still dealing with an ankle injury. On the practice field today, both Knighton and Roth were held out of practice.

Two other Jaguars defensive players were limited today as well, in defensive tackle Tyson Alualu and cornerback Derek Cox. Alualu has been dealing with a knee injury and his been limited every Wednesday of the season. Cox, was listed as having a knee injury he likely suffered during the game against the Browns.

Defensive end Aaron Kampman (hamstring), wide receiver Brian Robiskie (hamstring), and offensive tackle Guy Whimper (thigh) were also all limited in practice.

Start Andre Johnson Against Jacksonville Jaguars:…

Andre Johnson(notes) is finally ready to return to the field for the Houston Texans, and that is great news for newly anointed quarterback Matt Leinart(notes). This is even better news for fantasy football owners that have held on to Johnson while he suffered through injuries and then set-backs during the recovery period.

With Matt Schaub out for the year with his own injury, the team will have to turn to Leinart and Johnson to carry them to the postseason. Coming into this season, Johnson needed to step into that role anyways, but he has really been limited so far in 2011. He did post 352 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns early on though, but he will have to do even better than that in the coming weeks.

For fantasy football owners, Johnson will take the field on Nov. 27 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He and the Texans are coming off a bye week, so the team might start a little slow in the game, but everyone should have a lot of rest as well. Johnson becomes a must-start against a pretty weak team on defense, and there is a chance that he could put up some very impressive statistics.

It’s rough on fantasy football owners that Johnson is returning during a bye week, especially as many leagues near the postseason. At least he will become one of the must-start receivers for Week 12 though, and that could serve as a huge boost to any team that has limped along lately. For the Texans, he comes back at a very opportune time. The team is trying to pull away in the AFC South, and losing Schaub was of huge detriment to the team. Getting Johnson back may serve as a good boost for the team again, but the arm of Leinart becomes almost as important.

For the rest of the 2011 season, Johnson is a wide receiver that should get the start in any lineup (beginning in Week 12). It has been a long wait for him to get healthy, but he now presents the skill-set that could put up 120 yards and one or two touchdowns every week.

Fantasy Football Fan Analysis: Week 10 AFC South…

NFL football is just a few days away. Here are my sits and starts for Week 10 AFC South games:

Jacksonville Jaguars

Start – Maurice Jones-Drew(notes), RB

As great as Maurice Jones-Drew is, he hasn’t had the breakout game I’ve come to expect from him. Jones-Drew has been consistent, but he has only rushed for 100 yards twice this season. I expect that to change this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts’ 31st-ranked run defense. Look for Jones-Drew to have his best game of the season with at least 125 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Start – Paul Posluszny(notes), LB

This is just a reminder for IDP owners who benched or dropped Paul Posluszny during the bye week to pick him back up for this game. He’s going to have a field day against the hapless Colts.

Indianapolis Colts

Start – Pat Angerer(notes), LB

Sorry, this is all I have for the 0-9 Colts. Pat Angerer is going to be busy this weekend chasing down Jones-Drew. Expect his league-leading tackling numbers to rise along with your fantasy score.

Sit – Delone Carter(notes), RB

Just because Delone Carter leads the Colts in rushing doesn’t mean you should consider adding him to your roster. He’s going to have a rough day against the solid Jaguars defense. I recommend you stay away from Carter.

Houston Texans

Start – Arian Foster(notes) and Ben Tate(notes), RB

I love what the Texans have done in the absence of receiver Andre Johnson(notes). The team has transformed into an all-out run offense, which takes the pressure off Matt Schaub(notes) while keeping both running backs fresh. If you have either one of these players, start him. The Texans are facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 26th-ranked rush defense this Sunday. With this kind of matchup, I’m expecting the Texans to run all over the Bucs.

Sit – Matt Schaub, QB

Matt Schaub isn’t a bad start on Sunday. I just think with the Texans’ running game dominating opponents, there’s no need for him to throw the ball much. Schaub will have a decent game on Sunday against the Bucs, but I’m not expecting a lights-out performance.

Tennessee Titans

Start – Chris Johnson, RB

I’m not sure why the Titans went away from the running game when they were leading the Bengals last week, but it seemed like Chris Johnson was finally waking up. He had 110 total yards for the game, including 64 on the ground for a 4.6 yards-per-carry average. This week, the Titans are playing a Carolina Panthers team that is ranked 27th in the NFL against the rush. It’s a great matchup for Johnson owners. Hopefully, this is the game he finally plays like we all know he’s capable of.

Sit – Matt Hasselbeck(notes), QB

This is similar to what I said about Matt Schaub. I think the Titans are going to have a great game on the ground. This doesn’t mean that Hasselbeck is a bad start or anything. I just believe there are other quarterbacks out there who are going to put up better numbers this weekend.

Derek Ciapala has been playing fantasy football for over 10 years and has hosted an IDP league every year since 2001. He’s hoping to win another trophy in this year’s league. You can follow him on Twitter @dciapala.

Houston Texans take down Jacksonville Jaguars

Reuters

4:25 p.m. EDT, October 30, 2011

SportsDirect Inc.

Recap: Texans 24, Jaguars 14

Matt Schaub threw a touchdown pass and ran for another as the Houston Texans held the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars to 160 yards of offense en route to a 24-14 win on Sunday.

Tight end Joel Dreessen caught a 7-yard touchdown in the third quarter to break a 7-7 tie and Arian Foster added a 4-yard score in the fourth for the Texans (5-3), who remained a half-game ahead of the Titans in the AFC South.

Foster had a combined 234 yards in Houston’s 41-7 victory at Tennessee last week, but only 124 on Sunday – 112 on the ground – for his fifth straight game with 100 yards or more from scrimmage.

Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew, who entered the game second in the NFL with 677 yards rushing, was held to 63 and a touchdown as the Jaguars (2-6) fell to 2-7 in their last nine games at Houston.

The Texans took a 7-0 lead on Schaub’s 2-yard run in the first quarter.

Jacksonville answered when Jason Hill caught his third touchdown pass in four games, a 5-yarder from rookie Blaine Gabbert in the second quarter.

The score was set up when the Jaguars’ Clint Session sacked Schaub at the Houston 35 and forced a fumble, which was returned 22 yards and wound up back in Session’s hands after two laterals.

Gabbert left the game for one series in the first quarter with a rib injury, but returned. He finished 10 of 30 for 97 yards with two interceptions and has completed only 45.6 percent of his passes this season.

Schaub was 16 of 30 for 225 yards.
