Former Jacksonville Jaguars
quarterback David Garrard signed with the Miami Dolphins, who
missed out on free agents Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn.

Garrard, who was out of the National Football League in
2011 after being cut by the Jaguars, said last night on his
Twitter page he “couldn’t be happier” about his new team.

Garrard, 34, may compete with Matt Moore for the starting
quarterback job in Miami next season. The Dolphins had Manning,
Flynn and Alex Smith in for visits, though Manning is headed for
the Denver Broncos, ESPN reported, and Flynn signed with the
Seattle Seahawks. The Dolphins may still consider signing Smith,
who spent the past six NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers,
the Associated Press said.

In nine seasons in Jacksonville, Garrard passed for 16,003
yards, with 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions. He was the
Jaguars’ starter from 2005-10 and was released five days before
the first game of the 2011 regular season.

The Dolphins reached out to Garrard when Chad Henne
suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, but Garrard underwent
back surgery in October.

Former Jaguars QB Garrard signs with Dolphins

MIAMI (AP) – Quarterback David Garrard signed a one-year contract Monday with the Miami Dolphins and said he was told he’ll be given a shot at the starting job.

The Dolphins reached agreement with the former Jacksonville Jaguars QB after failed courtships with Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn. They also hosted San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith for a visit Sunday and may still consider signing him.

Garrard said he expects to compete for the starting job with incumbent Matt Moore and perhaps another quarterback the Dolphins acquire.

Miami safety Yeremiah Bell was told he’ll be released to create cap space, a person familiar with the discussions said. The person confirmed the discussions to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins hadn’t announced a move.

The 34-year-old Garrard, a starter for Jacksonville from 2005-10, didn’t play last season. He was released five days before the opener by the Jaguars, and the Dolphins courted him last year after quarterback Chad Henne’s season was ended by a shoulder injury.

But Garrard didn’t sign, and instead underwent back surgery in October.

His best season was in 2007, when he threw 18 touchdown passes and only three interceptions. He topped 3,500 yards passing in 2008 and 2009, and he’s 39-37 as a starter in nine seasons, all with Jacksonville.

By cutting the 34-year-old Bell, the Dolphins save more than $4 million in cap space, which could be used in negotiations with Smith.

Bell has played his entire eight-year career with Miami and became a starter in 2006. He made the Pro Bowl in 2009 and led the team in tackles each of the past four seasons.

The Miami Dolphins signed veteran quarterback David Garrard to a one year deal on Monday night.

Garrard, who had a visit with the Rams set up for later this week, will likely compete with Matt Moore for the starting quarterback spot.

Miami hosted Garrard for a workout on Monday, putting the former Jaguars quarterback through a battery of medical and physical tests.

The Dolphins offered Garrard a deal last year after former Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. But Garrard and the Dolphins could not come to terms on a deal and he later underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc.

Garrard, 34, played nine seasons in the NFL — all with the Jacksonville Jaguars — before he missed the 2011 season.

He started 65-of-66 games from 2006-10. In 2010, Garrard threw for 2,734 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He was sacked 33 times.

The Jaguars, which drafted Blaine Gabbert in the first round of the 2011 draft, released Garrard before the season opener last year to avoid guaranteeing him his salary. Garrard has thrown for more than 16,000 yards with 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions.

That’s all the news for today.

Former Jaguars QB Garrard says he's joining…

Former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard is joining the Miami Dolphins, he told Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer on Monday night in a text message.

Garrard confirmed the move in a tweet, saying “It’s official guys I’m a Miami dolphin!!! Couldn’t be happier!!!”

Garrard said he expects to compete for the starting job with incumbent Matt Moore and perhaps another quarterback the Dolphins acquire.

Darlington: Tebow Time isn’t over

A league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora that Garrard’s deal is for one year.

The Dolphins missed out on Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, who chose the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, respectively. Alex Smith visited Miami on Sunday, but with Garrard now in Miami, Smith could return to San Francisco, where he has spent his entire NFL career.

Garrard, a starter for the Jaguars from 2005 to 2010, didn’t play last season. He was released five days before the opener, then underwent back surgery in October.

The Dolphins offered Garrard a contract last season after his release, but the season-ending surgery on his herniated disc quelled talks between the two sides.

Garrard compiled a 39-37 record with the Jaguars in his time with the team. In his last season in Jacksonville, he threw for 2,734 yards with 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

He made the Pro Bowl in 2009 after throwing for 3,597 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Jaguars bring on QB Henne to push Gabbert

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Even with former Miami Dolphins starter Chad Henne in the mix, the Jacksonville Jaguars don’t anticipate a quarterback competition.

Henne signed a two-year contract worth nearly $6.75 million with the Jaguars on Wednesday night, giving the team a capable backup to Blaine Gabbert.

The Jaguars were looking to upgrade the No. 2 spot after Luke McCown failed to impress general manager Gene Smith in four games and two starts last season.

Nonetheless, new coach Mike Mularkey created a minor buzz Thursday when he spoke about Henne’s role.

Mularkey says Henne is “coming in as a backup, competing for a starting job.” He adds that Henne “knows his role” and that he has assured Gabbert that he’s the team’s starter.

Jaguars sign QB Henne to push starter Gabbert

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) Even with former Miami Dolphins starter Chad Henne in the mix, the Jacksonville Jaguars don’t anticipate a quarterback competition.

Henne signed a two-year contract worth nearly $6.75 million with the Jaguars on Wednesday, giving the team a capable backup to Blaine Gabbert.

”All I know right now is I’m going to go in there and compete,” Henne said Thursday. ”I know I have an opportunity to compete, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The Jaguars were looking to upgrade the No. 2 spot after Luke McCown failed to impress general manager Gene Smith in four games and two starts last season.

Nonetheless, new coach Mike Mularkey created a minor buzz Thursday when he spoke about Henne’s role. Henne threw 31 touchdown passes and 37 interceptions in 36 games in Miami. He was decent in four games last season before needing season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder and missing the final 12 games.

”He’s coming in as a backup, competing for a starting job,” Mularkey said. ”Everybody comes in here to compete for a starting job. I hope that’s the way it’s always going to be. We don’t want anybody here that’s very comfortable and wants to be in a backup role, and never will.

”Chad knows his role and Blaine and I had a conversation this morning that we are all on the same page of why he’s here. Like I said earlier, we’re very happy that he’s here. He’s going to help Blaine in his development and he’s going to help our football team.”

That might not be the strongest vote of confidence for Gabbert. Then again, the former Missouri star might need a little extra motivation.

Gabbert completed 50.8 percent of his passes for 2,214 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as a rookie last season. It was well below expectations after the Jaguars selected Gabbert with the 10th overall pick.

The plan wasn’t to have Gabbert start any games in 2011, especially since the NFL lockout wiped out most of the offseason, which is especially important for rookies. But with fellow newcomers Cam Newton (Carolina) and Andy Dalton (Cincinnati) playing well from Day 1, Gabbert’s season probably looked worse than it really was.

However, Gabbert played without a No. 1 receiver, worked behind a shuffled and often inconsistent line, had countless passes dropped and had a lame-duck coaching staff.

Nonetheless, there were times he looked scared in the pocket, seemed to feel phantom pressure and was very inaccurate on some short throws.

Despite his shortcomings, the Jaguars stuck with Gabbert through a 5-11 season that included two wins against woeful Indianapolis and a victory over equally inept Tampa Bay.

Now, though, the Jaguars have an option.

”Obviously Blaine has been there for the past year and they are definitely going to give him a good chance, which is expectedly so,” Henne said. ”I’m there to blend in, help him out and help the Jaguars win games.”

The Jaguars gave Gabbert and Henne some help.

Former Dallas receiver Laurent Robinson signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract Wednesday to be the team’s No. 1 receiver. Some believe the Jaguars overpaid for Robinson, who played for Atlanta, St. Louis and San Diego – and was even cut by Dallas – before his breakout season with the Cowboys in 2011.

Robinson caught 54 passes for 858 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. He played for Mularkey in Atlanta, worked with receivers coach Jerry Sullivan during the lockout and dazzled new owner Shahid Khan in college at Illinois State.

He wanted to stay in Dallas, where he was the No. 3 receiver, but said the Cowboys didn’t have the salary cap space.

”They could only do so much,” Robinson said. ”They didn’t really have the cap space to make a significant run. It all worked out here in Jacksonville, so I’m just excited to be a Jaguar.”

Henne wasn’t as eager to stay in Miami. Not that many would blame him. Even though the Jaguars would like to avoid a quarterback competition, everyone knows what will happen if Gabbert continues to struggle.

”There was some talks (with Miami), but I think they are on the Peyton Manning street right now, so they are going to wait a while,” Henne said. ”In my position, there wasn’t much time to wait. I kind of wanted a new start, a fresh start and find a team where I feel comfortable. I just want to be on a team that wants to win games.”

There is the quick update of the day.

Jaguars Sign Offensive Tackle Guy Whimper

Whimper signs 2-year contract with Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed veteran
offensive tackle Guy Whimper to a two-year contract.

Whimper, who started 15 games last season, would have become an unrestricted
free agent next week.

A fourth-round draft pick by the New York Giants in 2006, Whimper joined the
Jaguars in November 2010. He has played in 21 games for Jacksonville since.

He likely will return to a backup role this fall, as right tackle Eben
Britton
returns from back surgery.

Whimper is the third potential free agent the Jaguars have retained this
week. They used the franchise tag on kicker Josh Scobee on Monday and signed
veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis to a one-year deal Thursday.

NFL-New Jacksonville owner has grand plans for…

By Simon Evans

JACKSONVILLE, March 5 (Reuters) – The Jacksonville
Jaguars have long been in need of a boost and the struggling
National Football League team may have finally found it from an
unexpected source, Pakistan-born Shahid Khan.

Khan bought control of the Jaguars late last year for a
reported $760 million from Wayne Weaver, who led the
organization into the NFL in 1995, and has quickly set about
making his presence felt, both at the club and the north Florida
community.

Unsurprisingly for a man who started out “with a one way
ticket and a few hundred bucks” but is now a multi-millionaire
auto-parts businessman and member of the elite 32-man club of
NFL owners, Khan isn’t lacking in confidence or ideas.

He was born in Lahore and like many of his countrymen, he
grew up with the more genteel sport of cricket, but fell in love
with American football after moving to the United States.

“You learn to love the sport,” Khan told Reuters in an
interview.

“It’s a three dimensional kind of chess first you come in
as a spectator but I’ll never forget watching Walter Payton at
the Chicago Bears and no matter how many times he was hit, the
guy kept going.”

Inspired by what he saw on the field and what he had
achieved in his own life, Khan decided to get involved.

“You watch those games on a Sunday and then during the week,
in your own life, you have some sort of obstacle,” he said.

“I reflected back and thought, you can’t give up. It
provides some kind of inspiration.

“But it was only about six years ago when I thought, I have
developed a love and affection as a fan for the sport and I’d
like to be part of it.”

Becoming one of the NFL’s owners was no easy task. Anyone
seeking a way into the league not only needs the financial
muscle but also the support of the other owners. Khan passed
both tests.

EXCLUSIVE CLUB

“It is exclusive because you have to be accepted, you have
to be able to find the opportunity and you have to be able to
afford the opportunity,” he said.

“I went to the league six years ago and said ‘I have an
interest, how does one get introduced?’ and they said here are
some names of owners if you want to go and talk to them.”

Those talks led him to an eventually unfruitful attempt to
take control of the St. Louis Rams but he eventually got his
opportunity in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars, who have struggled at times to fill their
stadium and have just two divisional championships to their
name, are viewed by many as one of the weaker franchises in the
league and have frequently been mentioned as candidates for
relocation.

There were initial fears the sale to Khan might be the
prelude to a move away from the city but the new owner moved
quickly to reassure everyone of his commitment to the city.

“We had a rally to meet the (new) coach on a Tuesday night
at 5.30pm, almost 7,000 people turned up. They are hardcore and
they are nuts,” he said.

“This isn’t South Florida or Tampa, this is North
Florida-South Georgia which is football crazy. It’s the only
game in town, there are no other sports.”

Khan has been embraced by the local community and become a
celebrity in his own right.

“He’s done a good job of being public and visible and I
think people have responded well to that,” said Tania Ganguili,
Jaguars reporter for the Florida Times Union.

Khan has grand ambitions for his team. He not only wants
them to excel on the field, he also wants them to become a
global brand, that will promote Jacksonville.

“We have to work the territory,” he said.

“There hasn’t been much success on the field it is the
most important thing, especially given this is a young franchise
and we don’t have third and fourth generation fans here.

“I think we can add value by being international. I think it
needs a home team that is committed there for a few years, who
can go engage the fans and the community. It’s also a great way
to sell the city globally.”

Jaguars' Nate Collins faces marijuana charge

Published: Feb. 28, 2012 at 11:39 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 28 (UPI) — Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Nate Collins has been charged with marijuana possession in Virginia.

A state trooper pulled Collins over on U.S. 29 Thursday because his vehicle had tinted windows, The Florida Times-Union reported. The trooper said he smelled marijuana and discovered some marijuana cigarettes in a bag in the trunk.

The traffic stop was made in Warrenton, about 50 miles southeast of Washington.

Collins was given a ticket and ordered to appear in court April 19.

The Jaguars said in a statement team officials are aware of the charges and would not comment.

Collins, 24, who played for the University of Virginia, spent nine weeks with the Giants practice squad in 2010 before joining the Jaguars. He played 12 games in 2011, making 15 tackles, and became the second defensive lineman for the Jaguars to score a touchdown.

On March 13, Collins becomes an exclusive rights free agent, who will have to accept an offer from the Jaguars if the team makes one.
