Jacksonville: Tim Tebow Didn’t Want To Come Here

Jacksonville: Tim Tebow Didn’t Want To Come Here

Tim Tebow

Jacksonville, Fl. – Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan said the team had tried their hardest to trade for quarterback Tim Tebow from Denver, but in the end Tebow didn’t want to go to Florida.

The Florida Times-Union interviewed Khan this week and the Jaguars owner said the team was willing to sacrifice a third round pick and eat $3 million dollars to land Tebow’s services.

Khan told reporters at the NFL:’s annual meetings,

“That would have been the worst thing for Jacksonville and the worst thing for him. He didn’t want to come, obviously. … Any one of the 53 players we have, have to be committed to Jacksonville, making us be the best team we are. The question was: Did he want to come? And if the decision had been taken out (of his hands) and we got him, that would not be good for him, or for us.”

Tebow originally said the decision was out of his hands.  He said,

“Ultimately, I really didn’t have any[Choice] because the Broncos had all that power. I was just kind of watching and waiting—kind of like everybody else. It was an interesting day.”

Broncos vice president John Elway said he did have a choice saying,

“We did. There was more (offered) from Jacksonville, but we looked at it and it was close enough and we were in contact with Tim throughout the day and talked to him. He knew what was going on the whole time, so the reports that he was not involved are not accurate,”

Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey said the team did a lot to try to get Tebow to come to Jacksonville, He said,

“Don’t believe everything you hear or read in the media. It’s hard not to want a guy like that. We wouldn’t have tried to trade for him if we didn’t feel like we didn’t want to have him here. There were a lot of things that went into this thing to try to get Tim to come here. In the long run, it did not work out. But if you do not want a player, you don’t even get involved.”

The Jaguars and Jets were the top two choices for Tebow.  In the end he told people that in New York he had a better chance to start.  Jacksonville told him they had no promises for where he would wind up on their roster.

Khan said,

“We were not going to say coming in, ‘He’s slotted at whatever’. We have two quarterbacks now (Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne) that we’re committed to. He would have to compete with them.”

David Garrard appears to be the answer in Miami. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the question was, “What quarterback do you sign when all your other choices have gone elsewhere?”

That’s not a slam on Garrard, who signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins on Monday and was told he’d be able to compete for the starting job. The nine-year veteran who has spent his entire pro career with the Jacksonville Jaguars could end up being a great pickup for the team if fully recovered from back surgery last October.

After all, this is a guy who threw 18 touchdown passes and only three interceptions in 2007, passed for more than 3,500 yards in 2008 and 2009 and also made the Pro Bowl in 2009.

But it’s just not the splashy move the Dolphins were looking to make at quarterback this off-season. They pursued the top free agents at the position — Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn — and were spurned by both.

They brought in Alex Smith, another free agent who appeared to be in limbo with the 49ers during the Manning saga. But Smith’s job seems to be secure in San Francisco once again.

The Dolphins won’t be getting a highly coveted quarterback with the eighth pick in the draft either. Not with the Indianapolis Colts seemingly locked in on Stanford’s Andrew Luck at No. 1 and the Washington Redskins moving up to No. 2, presumably to pick Baylor’s Robert Griffin III.

Basically there just weren’t enough big name quarterbacks to go around. So the Dolphins turned to Garrard, a guy they initially pursued last season when they lost then-starter Chad Henne to a shoulder injury. But Garrard, who was cut by the Jaguars five days before the season started, opted to get his back fixed instead.

Matt Moore ended up starting the rest of the season for the Dolphins and did pretty well, going 6-6 while completing 60.5% of his passes for 2,497 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

So maybe the Dolphins will be fine with a little healthy competition among Garrard, Moore and anyone else they might pick up (they might draft someone and, don’t forget, Tim Tebow might soon be available).

“It’s going to be a great competition, and I’m all about that,” Garrard said. “I’m going to do my best to make sure it’s me on opening day.”

Bengals re-sign Nelson, sign former Texans…

CINCINNATI – The Bengals on Monday announced two moves to help bolster the team’s secondary in 2012.

Cincinnati re-signed safety Reggie Nelson and signed cornerback Jason Allen. Both were unrestricted free agents.

Nelson led the Bengals in interceptions last season with four and continues to be one of the hardest hitting safeties in the NFL. Cincinnati acquired Nelson (the 21st overall pick in 2007 out of Florida) from the Jaguars in September 2010. He started every game for the Bengals last season.

Several teams, including the New York Jets, were interested in Nelson this offseason. However, it was his relationship with head coach Marvin Lewis and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer that led to his decision to re-sign with the Bengals, according to reports.

Allen, a former first round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2006, played in all 18 games with Houston Texans in 2011 Ironically, it was the Texans who eliminated the Bengals from the playoffs last season. He joined Houston during the 2010 season and had seven interceptions over 23 total regular season games with the Texans, tops on the team for that span and also tied for second among all AFC cornerbacks.

News about Allen’s signing broke Saturday night, but the Bengals did not confirm the move until Monday.

“These signings are obviously a huge plus for our secondary,” said head coach Marvin Lewis. “Reggie and Jason are physical players who have had success and are entering the prime years of their careers. Reggie helped us get to the playoffs last year, and Jason helped Houston get there and advance beyond us. They are good players who have the opportunity to keep improving.”

On Saturday, the Bengals signed veteran guard Travelle Wharton, who spent his first eight NFL seasons with Carolina.

In other Bengals news on Monday, the team visited with the following free agents: Tight end Joelle Dressen, cornerback Terrance Newman, running back Benjarvus Green-Ellis and defensive end Derrick Harvey.

Mike McGlynn, who played in seven games with four starts on the Bengals’ offensive line last season, signed with the Indianapolis Colts on Monday.

Ex-Jaguars Quarterback David Garrard Signs With…

Tue Mar 20 04:00:54 GMT 2012

Former Jacksonville Jaguars
quarterback David Garrard signed with the Miami Dolphins, who
missed out on free agents Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn.

Garrard, who was out of the National Football League in
2011 after being cut by the Jaguars, said last night on his
Twitter page he “couldn’t be happier” about his new team.

Garrard, 34, may compete with Matt Moore for the starting
quarterback job in Miami next season. The Dolphins had Manning,
Flynn and Alex Smith in for visits, though Manning is headed for
the Denver Broncos, ESPN reported, and Flynn signed with the
Seattle Seahawks. The Dolphins may still consider signing Smith,
who spent the past six NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers,
the Associated Press said.

In nine seasons in Jacksonville, Garrard passed for 16,003
yards, with 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions. He was the
Jaguars’ starter from 2005-10 and was released five days before
the first game of the 2011 regular season.

The Dolphins reached out to Garrard when Chad Henne
suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, but Garrard underwent
back surgery in October.

Miami Dolphins sign ex-Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard

The Miami Dolphins signed veteran quarterback David Garrard to a one year deal on Monday night.

Garrard, who had a visit with the Rams set up for later this week, will likely compete with Matt Moore for the starting quarterback spot.

Miami hosted Garrard for a workout on Monday, putting the former Jaguars quarterback through a battery of medical and physical tests.

The Dolphins offered Garrard a deal last year after former Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. But Garrard and the Dolphins could not come to terms on a deal and he later underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc.

Garrard, 34, played nine seasons in the NFL — all with the Jacksonville Jaguars — before he missed the 2011 season.

He started 65-of-66 games from 2006-10. In 2010, Garrard threw for 2,734 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He was sacked 33 times.

The Jaguars, which drafted Blaine Gabbert in the first round of the 2011 draft, released Garrard before the season opener last year to avoid guaranteeing him his salary. Garrard has thrown for more than 16,000 yards with 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions.

That’s all the news for today.

David Garrard will be the new franchise QB for the Miami Dolphins. I can promise. Matt Moore was okay with the Panthers but had way more to work with (such as a great O-Line) than what David Garrard had to work with. Garrard was stuck with one of the worst O-Lines which lead to previous injuries and the defense at Jacksonville was a joke. David Garrard will be an upgrade for the Miami Dolphins. Don’t think otherwise. He is fast. He is physical. He is hard to take down. He is intelligent and has always made smart decisions on regardless of who to pass to or whether to ground the football when needed. He has racked up more rushing yards than most NFL Quarterbacks over the last few years. He wont be anything close to a bust like some of these ignorant critics will say. I’ll guarantee that.

Jaguars sign QB Henne to push starter Gabbert

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) Even with former Miami Dolphins starter Chad Henne in the mix, the Jacksonville Jaguars don’t anticipate a quarterback competition.

Henne signed a two-year contract worth nearly $6.75 million with the Jaguars on Wednesday, giving the team a capable backup to Blaine Gabbert.

”All I know right now is I’m going to go in there and compete,” Henne said Thursday. ”I know I have an opportunity to compete, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The Jaguars were looking to upgrade the No. 2 spot after Luke McCown failed to impress general manager Gene Smith in four games and two starts last season.

Nonetheless, new coach Mike Mularkey created a minor buzz Thursday when he spoke about Henne’s role. Henne threw 31 touchdown passes and 37 interceptions in 36 games in Miami. He was decent in four games last season before needing season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder and missing the final 12 games.

”He’s coming in as a backup, competing for a starting job,” Mularkey said. ”Everybody comes in here to compete for a starting job. I hope that’s the way it’s always going to be. We don’t want anybody here that’s very comfortable and wants to be in a backup role, and never will.

”Chad knows his role and Blaine and I had a conversation this morning that we are all on the same page of why he’s here. Like I said earlier, we’re very happy that he’s here. He’s going to help Blaine in his development and he’s going to help our football team.”

That might not be the strongest vote of confidence for Gabbert. Then again, the former Missouri star might need a little extra motivation.

Gabbert completed 50.8 percent of his passes for 2,214 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as a rookie last season. It was well below expectations after the Jaguars selected Gabbert with the 10th overall pick.

The plan wasn’t to have Gabbert start any games in 2011, especially since the NFL lockout wiped out most of the offseason, which is especially important for rookies. But with fellow newcomers Cam Newton (Carolina) and Andy Dalton (Cincinnati) playing well from Day 1, Gabbert’s season probably looked worse than it really was.

However, Gabbert played without a No. 1 receiver, worked behind a shuffled and often inconsistent line, had countless passes dropped and had a lame-duck coaching staff.

Nonetheless, there were times he looked scared in the pocket, seemed to feel phantom pressure and was very inaccurate on some short throws.

Despite his shortcomings, the Jaguars stuck with Gabbert through a 5-11 season that included two wins against woeful Indianapolis and a victory over equally inept Tampa Bay.

Now, though, the Jaguars have an option.

”Obviously Blaine has been there for the past year and they are definitely going to give him a good chance, which is expectedly so,” Henne said. ”I’m there to blend in, help him out and help the Jaguars win games.”

The Jaguars gave Gabbert and Henne some help.

Former Dallas receiver Laurent Robinson signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract Wednesday to be the team’s No. 1 receiver. Some believe the Jaguars overpaid for Robinson, who played for Atlanta, St. Louis and San Diego – and was even cut by Dallas – before his breakout season with the Cowboys in 2011.

Robinson caught 54 passes for 858 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. He played for Mularkey in Atlanta, worked with receivers coach Jerry Sullivan during the lockout and dazzled new owner Shahid Khan in college at Illinois State.

He wanted to stay in Dallas, where he was the No. 3 receiver, but said the Cowboys didn’t have the salary cap space.

”They could only do so much,” Robinson said. ”They didn’t really have the cap space to make a significant run. It all worked out here in Jacksonville, so I’m just excited to be a Jaguar.”

Henne wasn’t as eager to stay in Miami. Not that many would blame him. Even though the Jaguars would like to avoid a quarterback competition, everyone knows what will happen if Gabbert continues to struggle.

”There was some talks (with Miami), but I think they are on the Peyton Manning street right now, so they are going to wait a while,” Henne said. ”In my position, there wasn’t much time to wait. I kind of wanted a new start, a fresh start and find a team where I feel comfortable. I just want to be on a team that wants to win games.”

There is the quick update of the day.

Mar 9, 2012 – We have not quite entered full-fledged NFL Free Agency yet but the Jaguars have already made a move to bring back on of their players from last year. They have re-signed offensive lineman Guy Whimper on Friday.

Ganguli later clarified that the Contract is for two years and worth no more than $5 million. Our Jaguars blog Big Cat Country isn’t particularly excited about the move.

Whimper has been in the NFL for five years, spending his first three years with the New York Giants and his final two with the Jaguars. After an injury riddled 2012 season he played and started in 15 contests for the Jaguars in 2011.

We’ll have more on the Jaguars and the moves they make in Free Agency at SB Nation Tampa Bay. For more on this signing and everything relating to the Jacksonville Jaguars please head to Big Cat Country.

NFL-New Jacksonville owner has grand plans for…

By Simon Evans

JACKSONVILLE, March 5 (Reuters) – The Jacksonville
Jaguars have long been in need of a boost and the struggling
National Football League team may have finally found it from an
unexpected source, Pakistan-born Shahid Khan.

Khan bought control of the Jaguars late last year for a
reported $760 million from Wayne Weaver, who led the
organization into the NFL in 1995, and has quickly set about
making his presence felt, both at the club and the north Florida
community.

Unsurprisingly for a man who started out “with a one way
ticket and a few hundred bucks” but is now a multi-millionaire
auto-parts businessman and member of the elite 32-man club of
NFL owners, Khan isn’t lacking in confidence or ideas.

He was born in Lahore and like many of his countrymen, he
grew up with the more genteel sport of cricket, but fell in love
with American football after moving to the United States.

“You learn to love the sport,” Khan told Reuters in an
interview.

“It’s a three dimensional kind of chess first you come in
as a spectator but I’ll never forget watching Walter Payton at
the Chicago Bears and no matter how many times he was hit, the
guy kept going.”

Inspired by what he saw on the field and what he had
achieved in his own life, Khan decided to get involved.

“You watch those games on a Sunday and then during the week,
in your own life, you have some sort of obstacle,” he said.

“I reflected back and thought, you can’t give up. It
provides some kind of inspiration.

“But it was only about six years ago when I thought, I have
developed a love and affection as a fan for the sport and I’d
like to be part of it.”

Becoming one of the NFL’s owners was no easy task. Anyone
seeking a way into the league not only needs the financial
muscle but also the support of the other owners. Khan passed
both tests.

EXCLUSIVE CLUB

“It is exclusive because you have to be accepted, you have
to be able to find the opportunity and you have to be able to
afford the opportunity,” he said.

“I went to the league six years ago and said ‘I have an
interest, how does one get introduced?’ and they said here are
some names of owners if you want to go and talk to them.”

Those talks led him to an eventually unfruitful attempt to
take control of the St. Louis Rams but he eventually got his
opportunity in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars, who have struggled at times to fill their
stadium and have just two divisional championships to their
name, are viewed by many as one of the weaker franchises in the
league and have frequently been mentioned as candidates for
relocation.

There were initial fears the sale to Khan might be the
prelude to a move away from the city but the new owner moved
quickly to reassure everyone of his commitment to the city.

“We had a rally to meet the (new) coach on a Tuesday night
at 5.30pm, almost 7,000 people turned up. They are hardcore and
they are nuts,” he said.

“This isn’t South Florida or Tampa, this is North
Florida-South Georgia which is football crazy. It’s the only
game in town, there are no other sports.”

Khan has been embraced by the local community and become a
celebrity in his own right.

“He’s done a good job of being public and visible and I
think people have responded well to that,” said Tania Ganguili,
Jaguars reporter for the Florida Times Union.

Khan has grand ambitions for his team. He not only wants
them to excel on the field, he also wants them to become a
global brand, that will promote Jacksonville.

“We have to work the territory,” he said.

“There hasn’t been much success on the field it is the
most important thing, especially given this is a young franchise
and we don’t have third and fourth generation fans here.

“I think we can add value by being international. I think it
needs a home team that is committed there for a few years, who
can go engage the fans and the community. It’s also a great way
to sell the city globally.”

Mularkey on 2nd shot

February 26, 2012 – 1:07 PM |

INDIANAPOLIS — New Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey talked at the NFL Scouting Combine about how his second shot as a head coach is different from his first, which came in Buffalo in 2004 and 2005. Mularkey is the last Bills head coach to have a winning record (9-7 in ’04).

“There’s some things that I did that were right and that worked, and there were some things that I probably started even in the interview process that I probably did a better job of this time,” Mularkey said. “Some of the things that needed to get done. It was really a great process with Gene [Smith, GM] and Shad [Khan, owner], actually, in the discussion because a lot of things that occurred in Buffalo came
up and they appreciated my honesty with it. I think any job you’re at, whatever it is, position or coordinator or head coaching job, you’re always going to find things you could have done better based on what you’ve done or based on what you’ve seen others do, right or wrong. I’m not going to get into specifics, but it’s been much more of an easy transition going into this one in Jacksonville.”

“I’m more familiar with the whole process,” Mularkey said. “The hiring process. I think the staff that I’ve been able to put together, I’m very happy with the staff.”

Mularkey inherited some of Gregg Williams’ staff when he took over in Buffalo, and it didn’t work out well. In Jacksonville, he decided to retain defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, linebackers coach Mark Duffner and offensive line coach Andy Heck.

“You really want guys that want to be there,” Mularkey said. “I made that a point when I interviewed these guys. Some of them, including Mel Tucker, Mark Duffner, Andy Heck, previous guys that were on the staff that had opportunities to go other places and maybe even advance in their position. I asked them to go. I thought, first of all, this is very rewarding that you’re being recognized and wanted so much around the league by multiple teams that I think you should go. I’m not going to drive you to the interview. But I want you to go because I know if you are committed to coming back here then I know you are here as a Jaguar and there will be no what ifs. … I really have a good feeling about these guys.”

Garrard says he's feeling better, anticipating…

Former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard said Wednesday that his recovery from back surgery is going well and he’s looking forward to the coming free-agency period.

“This is going to be a fun time,” Garrard told the Florida Times-Union. “I’ve never been a free agent before. It’s almost like you’re being recruited again.”

Garrard underwent surgery last fall to repair an injury suffered in training camp. The Jaguars cut him shortly before the season opener, and he missed the entire season.

Garrard told the newspaper that he’s 90 to 95 percent recovered and thinks he’ll be ready to conduct workouts for interested teams in March.

Garrard’s comments are consistent with what his agent, Albert Irby, told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora earlier this month. Irby said Garrard was likely to be back in March or April, adding that a number of teams have asked about the former quarterback.

Garrard told the newspaper that he would prefer to start but would accept a position as a backup.

“I don’t have a big ego,” he said. “I love starting, I love being the guy that everybody looks up to. If that’s not quite the situation … I don’t have any harsh feelings toward that.”

Taken by the Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2002 NFL Draft, Garrard started every game he played in from 2007 to 2010, throwing for 12,460 yards with 71 touchdown passes against 41 interceptions. He said he bears no ill will toward the Jaguars, who finished with a 5-11 record, for cutting ties with him last year.

“I am so past that,” he said. “Back then I was definitely upset, but just as the year went on, I just started feeling more bad for them. Those are my guys, those were my teammates. I wanted to be out there to go through the grind with them, but I couldn’t. I eventually got over it. Move forward with new team, new teammates, new city. I don’t look to the past; I just want to look to the future.”

Five Fan Predictions for the Jacksonville Jaguars’…

Due to several unfortunate injuries to key Jacksonville Jaguars players, the Jaguars’ 2011 season has been one of the worst seasons in franchise history. Though the team has plenty to work on, the 2012 season will hopefully be more exciting for Jacksonville and the team should be much better next season if the injured players are able to recover from their injuries and stay healthy.

Here are five notable predictions of the Jaguars for the 2012 NFL season:

Blaine Gabbert will be selected to his first Pro Bowl

Blaine Gabbert, who was selected with the tenth pick by the Jaguars in the 2011 NFL Draft, has been having a solid season for a rookie. In 14 games Gabbert has a total of 11 touchdowns and 2,122 passing yards. His quarterback rating this season is 64.3. Though this prediction may be heavy and perhaps unrealistic, Gabbert had a great college career and will one day become a consistent Pro Bowl quarterback, and next year could be Gabbert’s starting point.

Jacksonville Jaguars will win eight or more games in 2012

Though the Jaguars did not make the playoffs last year, the team was able to win eight games, while losing eight. If Jacksonville can stay healthy and draft a key player in the 2012 NFL Draft, the team may have a good chance at winning eight or more games in 2012.

Josh Scobee will remain as the starting kicker

Along with the prediction that Jones-Drew will be selected to another Pro Bowl in 2012, this prediction is arguably the most likely to happen on my list. Scobee, who was selected by the Jaguars in the 2004 NFL Draft, has never played for another NFL team. He will most likely remain on the team as he is a talented kicker.

Maurice Jones-Drew will be selected to another Pro Bowl

Maurice Jones-Drew has been selected to three Pro Bowls so far in his career: in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Though the starting running back will be 27-years-old by the beginning of the 2012 NFL Season, he has a very good chance at making his fourth Pro Bowl.

Mel Tucker will not be the head coach next season

Mel Tucker, who is currently serving as the interim coach for the Jaguars, may be a good defensive coordinator, but he has not been as successful as the Jacksonville head coach. In four games this season, he is 1-3. Expect that Tucker will be replaced by a veteran coach, who can help the Jaguars transform into a better team for the 2012 NFL season.
